Wind Horse Adventure (Lung-ta)

Wind Horse Adventure (Lung-ta) came into being with a select group of managers, guides and staff. Though our company is relatively young (1997) our members are among the most experienced travel personnel working in Tibet. Our general manager, G. T. Sonam pioneered trekking in Tibet more than fifteen years ago. By forming our own company we have gained the independence and efficiency that some of the larger organizations working here do not have. Unlike some of the bigger companies in Tibet we are not simply interested in running high-volume tours through set itineraries. As our name and Home-page suggest, we look at "ecology" and "eco-tourism" as something more than just fashionable terms. We look forward to the chance to explore new places, tackle new problems, and introduce Tibet on a more personal level.

We run trips all over Tibetan areas of China but specialize in adventure itineraries in Central Tibet. Since we are a Tibetan company working entirely with international clientele we combine first-hand information and personal knowledge with standards that the travel industry expects anywhere. Because of the altitude and conditions of Tibet most companies label their Tibet trips as "adventure," and we agree it is important to realize that Tibet will not provide the same comfort as a 5-star beach vacation. However, we do not believe in hardship for the sake of hardship and will strive to provide the best service available on the plateau. In a place like Tibet we feel it is not safe, worthwhile or even fun to sacrifice quality for a few dollars.

In keeping with our adventuresome spirit, we have recently set up the first river rafting outfit in Tibet. With the help of European, American, Nepali and Australian consultants and managers we begin operation during the summer of 2003. We believe this will open a new dimension to travel in Tibet and have invested considerable time, effort and finances to make sure that this operation is as successful as our cultural and adventure itineraries.

Since Tibet has its own beauty and its own set of problems, the best source of information is from those who have already been here. We encourage you to contact and question friends or companies that have been to Tibet to get a better idea of what is involved with travel here. We are proud of our reputation in Tibet and urge you to ask specifically about Wind Horse Adventure. We have experience with an entire range of clients, from individual scholars with obscure research goals to large groups with tight international schedules. Some of the companies that we regularly work with include: Terre D'Aventure (France), Distant Horizon (Britain), Geographic Expeditions (<www.geoex.com>) and Smithsonian (<www.si.edu>) (USA), and Thor Travel (<www.thorworldtravel.com>) (Australia). We also have handled logistics for big events such as Raid Gauloise, 2000 (<www.raidgauloises.com>) and the historic first descent of the Tsangpo Gorge by Outside Magazine's (<www.outsidemag.com>) expedition, 2002.

We hope that you will also join us in exploring and appreciating this amazing land of Tibet.
