Maizhokunggar means "The Place Where Medro King has lived" in Tibetan language.

Maizhokunggar County is located in the valley of the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River.

The average altitude of the county is above 4000 metres.

The main mine resources are gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, marble and calcareousness, etc.

The Sichuan-Tibet Road runs through the county. There are over 70 roads in the county. The total length of the roads are 650 kilometres.

The main handicraft products are potteries, butter tea bottle, firepan and wine pot, etc.

There are 34 temples in the county and many hotsprings as well.
