Tibetan art protected for posterity

A total of 629.51 million yuan (US$75.8 million) was poured into the protection of folk art in the Tibet Autonomous Region from 1965 to 2004, China Radio International reports.

Over the four-decade period, teams visited more than 10,000 folk artists in the region, collected at least 10,000 pictures and songs, and accumulated written records of some 10 million words.

And more than 1,000 treatises on traditional Tibetan culture were published.

At present, the local cultural administration is trying to get Tibetan Opera listed as a world cultural heritage item to better protect it.
