Presided over by the spectacular Gyantse Dzong, and once the third largest town in Tibet, Offering a rare and beautiful glimpse of Tibetan rural life, Gyantse should not be missed by any visitor to the Tibet. Historically, it was a trading town for goods from Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan.
Gyantse is famous for its carpets. The Carpet Factory (tel. 0892/817-2004; open Mon-Sat, 9am-1pm, 3-7:30pm) is tucked away on the north side of Gyantse Dzong. The sales room is to the left of the entrance, but garish designs are prevalent. Near the factory, many people weave at home; you may be treated to a cup of sweet tea and a quick exhibition.
